How to Purchase Additional Pension Credits in Ukraine

Ukrainian citizens aged 16 and over have the option to voluntarily purchase additional pension insurance credits if they lack the required number of years to qualify for a state pension. This system is particularly relevant for self-employed individuals or those with gaps in their employment history. As of January 2026, the calculation base for these contributions is set at 8,647 hryvnias, with the minimum monthly payment being no less than 22% of the official minimum wage.

According to Olena Voronkova, the cost to purchase one month of credited service is 1,902.34 hryvnias. This allows an individual to make payments on their own behalf to have these periods counted toward their future pension eligibility. It is important to note that the minimum contract term for making these voluntary unified contributions is one full year.

Olena Voronkova also emphasized that regardless of whether a participant chooses to pay a higher amount, a contribution meeting the minimum threshold is sufficient to have a full month of service credited. This creates a flexible pathway for Ukrainians seeking to secure their future retirement income.

Benefits of the Initiative

This initiative serves as a crucial tool for those aiming to improve their retirement prospects, especially within a changing labor market and amid rising requirements for qualifying service. It not only enhances financial security in later life but also incentivizes citizens to formalize their income, which can positively impact the broader social security system and the national economy.
