Insights on Global Conflicts from 'The Diary Of A CEO' Podcast

In a recent episode of 'The Diary Of A CEO,' host Steven Bartlett sits down with Dr. Sarah Paine, a retired professor and historian from the U.S. Naval War College, to explore pressing international issues. Their conversation covers Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and the U.S. involvement in Iran, with Dr. Paine offering a critical perspective on the breakdown of global alliances and the looming risk of a world war. She emphasizes the vital role governments must play in preventing catastrophic outcomes and assesses the actions of world leaders while identifying key challenges facing future generations.

Dr. Paine, an expert in the imperial histories of Russia and China as well as maritime strategy, describes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—which began with the annexation of Crimea and the conflict in Donbas—as a pivotal blunder.

“Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is a fateful mistake,” Dr. Sarah Paine asserts.
She highlights how Russia exhausted much of its Cold War-era military stockpiles and points out the underestimation of Russian soldiers, who entered the conflict with only 3–10 days’ worth of food supplies and parade uniforms instead of proper combat gear. Paine also notes troubling logistical issues, evidenced by Russian troops stealing washing machines from Ukrainian homes.

Critique of the U.S. War in Iran and Emerging Geopolitical Trends

Turning to the U.S. military engagement in Iran, Dr. Paine calls it one of the most poorly executed wars in human history. She explains that this conflict severely damaged the U.S. economy and weakened its network of alliances. According to her,

“Starting wars is easy. Ending them is truly difficult,” Dr. Paine reflects.
She further warns that a war intended to curb nuclear proliferation has ironically fueled its spread.

Dr. Paine raises alarm about the possibility of a broader global conflict, suggesting, "We may be rapidly heading toward a world war." She analyzes President Putin’s ambitions to restore the Soviet-era empire, noting his seemingly limitless objectives in Ukraine. "Putin will keep pushing forward as long as he lives," she explains, adding that his death could spark severe instability or even civil war within Russia.

Additionally, Dr. Paine observes that the war has strengthened Ukrainian national identity. "Ukraine will not surrender," she affirms, stressing the importance of continued support from European allies. She also points out that Russia’s defense spending consumes 40% of its national budget, while $300 billion of the Central Bank’s reserves remain frozen abroad.

Regarding wider geopolitical dynamics, Dr. Paine highlights China’s backing of Russia by purchasing energy and goods at discounted rates. She believes, "China benefits from Russia’s weakening." She contrasts this with Europe’s post-World War II establishment of institutions that have maintained peace for over three generations.

Dr. Paine reminds listeners that "history has no clear beginning; it is a continuous flow." She calls for a deep sense of responsibility toward future generations, stating, "Nothing is more important than the generations that will come after us." According to her, the state’s primary duties include preventing foreign invasions, maintaining infrastructure, licensing professionals, and ensuring education.

Dr. Paine’s conclusions offer valuable insights into today’s conflicts and their implications for global politics. Her analytical perspective sheds light on the decisions of international leaders and identifies critical challenges facing the global community amid rising tensions among major powers. Understanding these trends is crucial for anticipating possible developments in international relations.
