Trump Appeals to Zelensky to Stop Targeting Russian Diesel Infrastructure
At the Irish Open tournament in Doonbeg, Ireland, on Sunday, former U.S. President Donald Trump called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to end attacks on Russian diesel fuel infrastructure. Trump argued that these strikes are worsening the global shortage of diesel fuel.
“Zelensky needs to do one thing: stop hitting diesel fuel targets in Russia,” Trump emphasized.
Effects of Ukrainian Strikes on Russia's Oil Refining Sector
Since the conflict began, Ukrainian forces have struck 16 major Russian oil refineries and terminals as of June 16, disabling over 30% of Russia’s refining capacity. In early July, an attack targeted the Omsk refinery, one of the country’s largest, followed by hits on nearly all top ten Russian refineries. Russian President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged gasoline shortages, underscoring the severity of the situation.
To mitigate the fuel crisis impacting nearly all regions of Russia, Moscow has taken several measures. These include negotiating imports of AI-92 gasoline from Kazakhstan, with potential shipments around 50,000 tons. Additionally, gasoline imports from Belarus surged nearly 2.5 times in June compared to May, reaching record levels. The tension remains high, highlighted by Ukrainian strikes on September 13 against the Slavyansky refinery in Slavyansk-na-Kubani and the Taneco refinery in Nizhnekamsk.
Trump further commented:
“Let him target other objectives, but not diesel fuel, because it’s creating a diesel shortage.”This remark reflects concerns about the conflict’s impact on the worldwide fuel market. Meanwhile, Russia continues its war against Ukraine into its fifth year, yet Trump has not called for Russia to cease hostilities.
