Security Status of Sofia Osoba
Iryna Farion’s daughter, Sofia Osoba, has confirmed that she is once again receiving state protection due to relentless daily threats against her life. The government initially provided security for the family after Farion’s murder, but that protection was withdrawn in January 2025. It has since been reinstated, and Osoba now says, “It is much safer now. They are nearby.”
Osoba reports that threats arrive almost every day from various accounts. She believes some originate from pro-Russian bots, but the majority come from what she calls the “Zinchenko sect,” which accuses her of killing her mother and issues other menacing statements.
“The threats are constant, every single day, from different accounts,” she stated. “I know my mother also received threats, and she reported them to law enforcement. All of that was reviewed and considered. But it still led to her murder.” — Sofia Osoba
Attack on Iryna Farion
To recall, the attack on Iryna Farion occurred on July 19 outside her home, when an unknown assailant shot her in the head. The professor was rushed to St. Panteleimon Hospital, but doctors could not save her life. On July 25, 18-year-old Vyacheslav Zinchenko was arrested in Dnipro and charged with premeditated murder motivated by national intolerance, as well as illegal weapons possession.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has stated that there is irrefutable evidence of Zinchenko’s guilt. Zinchenko remains in custody without the possibility of bail, and the charges against him carry a potential life sentence.
These events highlight the grave danger faced by Iryna Farion’s family members and the urgent need to ensure their safety. The ongoing threats against Sofia Osoba reflect rising societal tensions and raise serious concerns about the security of the victim’s relatives. Farion’s murder underscores the violent consequences that can stem from political or ideological extremism, and it points to the risks activists and their families endure in today’s socio-political climate.
