NATO in Contact with Romania Following Drone Incident
On May 29, a Russian drone crashed into an apartment block in the Romanian city of Galati, prompting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to reach out to Romanian authorities. The incident occurred overnight during a Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border. Romania’s Defense Ministry confirmed that the unmanned aerial vehicle hitting the multi-story building was of Russian origin.
Specialized teams from the IGSU, structures under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Romanian Intelligence Service, and the police are operating at the scene. Two people sustained minor injuries as a result:
- A woman with first-degree burns
- A 14-year-old boy who likely experienced a panic attack
Both victims are receiving medical care.
NATO spokesperson Allison Hart stated: 'Early this morning, a drone struck a residential building in Romania during a Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border. The NATO Secretary General is in contact with Romanian authorities. We condemn Russia's irresponsible actions, and NATO will continue to strengthen its defenses against any threats, including drones.'
Director of SAJ Galati, Daniela Enciu, also confirmed the casualties, noting: 'We are dealing with a woman who has first-degree burns and a 14-year-old boy who likely experienced a panic attack.'
Growing Threat from Russian Drones
This incident highlights the escalating danger posed by Russian drones in the region, particularly amid the ongoing military operations in Ukraine. NATO’s involvement underscores the severity of the event, as it could have security implications for neighboring countries. As a NATO member, Romania is receiving alliance support to bolster its defenses, which may shape the future trajectory of the situation in the area.
This incident is not isolated, as earlier this week, F-16 fighters were scrambled after a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace, raising alarms about the increasing frequency of such incursions. The ongoing tensions in the region highlight the urgent need for enhanced aerial defenses, especially in light of recent military actions near Ukraine's borders.
