Drone Incident in Latvia Triggers Security Response
Latvia’s Saeima (parliament) has urgently convened a meeting of the National Security Committee following a violation of its airspace by unidentified drones originating from Russia, which occurred overnight on May 7. Around 3:30 AM local time, residents in the border areas of Latgale received alerts about an airborne threat. One of the drones crashed onto the premises of an oil depot in the city of Rēzekne, damaging four empty storage tanks. When emergency responders arrived, there was no open fire, but smoke was detected at the scene, prompting crews to cool the containers as a precaution.
A second drone, according to preliminary information, came down in a sparsely populated area, and its exact location is still being determined. In response, authorities have canceled classes at schools and kindergartens in Rēzekne city as well as in the Rēzekne and Ludza municipalities. Police have launched a criminal investigation into the incident, while air defense forces and fighter jets have been placed on heightened alert.
Airspace Breach by Unmanned Aircraft
Earlier on May 7, Latvia’s armed forces reported that several drones had crossed the border from Russia. Andris Sprūds commented:
“Air defense units and fighter aircraft have been put on high readiness. He also suggested that the drones might have been part of Ukrainian operations targeting sites in Russia, but this version requires thorough verification.”
The National Security Committee of the Saeima is scheduled to convene at 12:45 PM.
This breach of Latvian airspace highlights the growing regional tension linked to the conflict in Ukraine. The situation demands an urgent response from Latvian authorities, as such incidents could threaten national security and the safety of its citizens. It is critical that national security and defense bodies act swiftly and in a coordinated manner to prevent any potential fallout from foreign drone activity.
