Ukrainian Drone Strikes Ignite Oil Facilities Across Russia: Fires Reported in Krasnodar, Azov, and Tver

Українські безпілотники завдають ударів по нафтозаводах у Росії: зафіксовані пожежі в Краснодарі, Азові та Твері.

Overnight Drone Attacks Target Russian Oil Infrastructure

In a series of coordinated overnight strikes, Ukrainian drones hit multiple oil-related sites inside Russia, including the Ilsky refinery in Krasnodar Krai, fuel storage depots in Azov, and the port of Taganrog. Several fires broke out across Krasnodar Krai, notably at the Ilsky refinery, where local emergency officials reported that debris from a downed drone ignited a blaze on the facility's grounds. Meanwhile, a fire at an oil depot in Tver has entered its second day, having started during the night of July 8–9. Long queues have formed at gas stations in Tver as a result.

The attacks also caused collateral damage to civilian infrastructure. Drone fragments struck several private homes in the Seversky District, though preliminary reports indicate no casualties. The Ilsky refinery—one of the largest refining plants in Russia’s Southern Federal District, with an annual design capacity of approximately 6.6 million tons of crude oil—has been targeted multiple times before.

Fires Spread and Emergency Responses Underway

The governor of Rostov Oblast confirmed the drone assault on Azov, where two separate fuel storage sites caught fire. Targets may have included the Azov Optical-Mechanical Plant or the DonTerminal oil depot. In the port of Taganrog, an oil terminal was set ablaze, prompting the evacuation of people from the emergency zone. Videos posted by the Exilenova+ and Astra channels showed plumes of smoke rising over both Azov and Taganrog.

In Moscow, the mayor reported that at least 14 drones were shot down, stating that emergency crews are currently working at debris impact sites. Russia’s aviation authority, Rosaviatsiya, was forced to impose restrictions at Domodedovo Airport, temporarily halting operations. Additionally, an electrical substation in Shakhtarsk, Donetsk Oblast, came under attack.

These strikes underscore the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, where modern technologies—particularly unmanned aerial vehicles—are being deployed. Such actions risk destabilizing Russia’s energy infrastructure, with potential knock-on effects on the regional economy. Moreover, these events could further escalate tensions between the two nations and prompt shifts in their respective military strategies.

As the situation continues to develop, the recent drone strikes have led to significant damage in Taganrog, where an oil terminal was engulfed in flames. For a detailed account of the inferno and its implications on local infrastructure, read more about the fire at the oil terminal in Taganrog.
