Overnight Drone Strike Targets Chemical Plant Supplying Russia's Defense Industry

Вночі безпілотники атакували завод, який постачає хімічні матеріали для оборонної промисловості Росії.

Strike on Nevinnomyssky Azot

On the night of May 16, drones struck the Nevinnomyssky Azot chemical plant in Russia's Stavropol Krai. This facility plays a critical role in producing components for explosives and supplies raw chemicals to Russia's military-industrial complex. The attack is not an isolated incident—drones also hit the same plant in June 2025.

The strike was reported by Glavcom, citing Russian monitoring channels and local residents. People in Nevinnomyssk shared videos showing flashes and explosion sounds in the industrial zone. Russian Telegram channels noted a large number of drones in the sky during the attack, while air defense activity was barely detected.

Plant's Strategic Role and Aftermath

As of publication, Russian authorities had not disclosed the extent of damage. Nevinnomyssky Azot specializes in producing ammonium nitrate, nitric acid, and ammonia. Ammonium nitrate is used in industrial explosives, nitric acid is a precursor for TNT and other nitro compounds, and ammonia serves as a base component for explosive mixtures.

This facility is a cornerstone of Russia's chemical industry and one of the country's largest producers of ammonia and ammonium nitrate. It features extensive industrial infrastructure with large chemical storage tanks and sits on key logistics routes in southern Russia. Since the start of the full-scale war, Russia has ramped up domestic chemical production due to sanctions.

Stavropol Krai Governor Vladimir Vladimirov confirmed debris fell in the industrial zone but did not specify whether there were casualties. Notably, drones also struck an oil refinery and port in Tuapse for the fourth time, and hit Russian aviation assets in Yeysk.

The attack on Nevinnomyssky Azot underscores growing threats to strategic Russian industrial sites that are vital for military needs.

In the context of the ongoing conflict, such strikes could significantly impact production capacity and military supply chains. Given the plant's importance to Russia's chemical sector, these attacks may further complicate the military-industrial complex's operations, especially under sanctions and international isolation. As a result, the situation around Nevinnomyssky Azot remains under close scrutiny from both local residents and international observers.

The recent drone strike on the Nevinnomyssky Azot plant highlights the increasing vulnerability of key industrial sites in Russia. This follows a series of attacks, including a significant incident at one of Russia's largest oil refineries in Ryazan, where fire engulfed the facility.
