Support for Sergey Bubka

Kateryna Usyk, the wife of Ukrainian boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk, has publicly expressed her support for International Olympic Committee member Sergey Bubka. She highlighted his two-year effort to assist wounded Ukrainian military personnel. In an Instagram story, she noted that Bubka personally delivered supplies for soldiers undergoing treatment in hospitals.

'For two years in a row, Serhiy Nazarovych Bubka personally gave me items so that the guys lying in the hospitals I was repairing would not return home with nothing!' wrote Kateryna Usyk.

Oleksandr Usyk also backed Bubka, sharing a photo with him. 'In this photo, I am with Serhiy Nazarovych Bubka, one of the greatest track and field athletes in history, a true pole vault legend and world record holder. I am sincerely glad to know this outstanding person,' the boxer stated.

Criticism and Debate

Meanwhile, skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych has called for Bubka to be stripped of his 'Hero of Ukraine' title and has registered a petition for sanctions against him. In an exclusive interview with 'Glavcom', Heraskevych explained his position on the situation surrounding Bubka, which has sparked debate within the sporting community.

This controversy highlights the complex role of sports figures during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The situation continues to elicit mixed reactions in Ukrainian society, with support and criticism for Bubka's actions coming from different quarters. Backing from prominent athletes like Oleksandr Usyk underscores the importance of social responsibility and mutual aid in times of crisis. Conversely, criticism from other sports figures points to divergent views on the role of athletes in Ukraine's socio-political processes, which can significantly impact their reputations and future activities.
