DTEK's Bird Conservation Initiatives
DTEK Dniprovski Electromerezhi is continuing its program to equip power poles with special nesting platforms for storks. As part of a large-scale initiative to ensure the safety and comfortable nesting of these birds, 10 new platforms were installed this year. This follows the installation of 25 platforms last year, bringing the total number of stork platforms set up by the company in the Dnipropetrovsk region to 264.
Beyond stork platforms, DTEK has also installed 35 nests for owls and other bird-protection devices in the region. This demonstrates the company's commitment to providing a safe environment for birds and preserving their populations. Company representatives explain the purpose:
“To ensure the storks' safety, we install special platforms on the power poles where the birds nest. This helps protect the birds from electrocution.”
Storks are a protected species in many regions, and their safe nesting is crucial for maintaining healthy populations. They begin returning to the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, and across most of Ukraine, their arrival is observed from the second half of March to the first half of April. The peak of their migration typically falls around March 19th, with the males arriving first. This timing underscores the importance of having safe nesting sites ready, as storks are widely regarded as a symbol of spring and renewal.
