Al Maktoum International Airport Takes Shape

Dubai authorities have broken ground on the massive Al Maktoum International Airport, a $35 billion megaproject that will ultimately handle up to 260 million passengers annually. Situated 35 kilometers from downtown Dubai, the facility will span 70 square kilometers and feature 400 boarding gates along with five runways.

In addition to the terminal infrastructure, planners are building an entire airport city that will include:

  • residential neighborhoods,
  • hotels,
  • retail zones,
  • business centers,
  • facilities for private and government aviation.

Once fully operational, the project is expected to provide housing and employment for roughly 1 million people.

What This Means for Global Aviation

Over the next decade, carriers Emirates and Flydubai will relocate their operations to this new hub. The airport’s initial phase will accommodate 150 million passengers each year. For context, Dubai International Airport (DXB) served 95.2 million travelers in 2025. Officials plan to permanently close DXB by 2035.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum described the future complex as 'a fully integrated airport city.'

The Al Maktoum project has the potential to reshape global aviation by establishing a major international transit hub. Its vast capacity and modern infrastructure will unlock new opportunities for the regional aviation sector and beyond.

This airport is a cornerstone of Dubai’s long-term strategy to cement its status as a worldwide aviation center. With air travel demand continuing to rise, the development not only addresses current market needs but also drives regional economic growth. The completion of this facility—backed by extensive infrastructure and social investments—is poised to boost Dubai’s appeal as a tourist destination and generate significant local employment.

As Dubai prepares for the transformation of its aviation landscape, it's important to consider the implications of closing its iconic airport. The anticipated shutdown of Dubai International Airport in 2035 will mark a significant shift in air travel dynamics.
