EASA Grants Approval for AeroSHARK Film Application
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has officially authorized Lufthansa Technik to apply the innovative AeroSHARK bionic film on Airbus A330 passenger aircraft. Designed to mimic the texture of shark skin, this cutting-edge film reduces aerodynamic drag. When applied to the fuselage, it lowers fuel consumption and harmful emissions by at least 1%, while covering the wings and tail can boost fuel savings up to 2%.
AeroSHARK has previously been installed on 22 Boeing 777 aircraft within the Lufthansa Group, enabling daily fuel savings of up to 19 tons. The first Airbus A330 to feature this technology will be the A330-300 operated by Discover Airlines.
Unlocking the Technology’s Environmental and Economic Benefits
"This approval unlocks the potential to enhance efficiency across a significant portion of the global long-haul fleet," said EASA representative Grazia Vittadini.
Beyond reducing operational fuel costs, AeroSHARK contributes to lowering aviation’s environmental footprint. As the industry faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices, the film’s implementation on the Airbus A330 marks a meaningful step toward greener air travel.
