Safety Hazards of Misusing EcoFlow Power Stations
Technical experts are issuing warnings about the dangers of incorrectly using EcoFlow portable power stations in Ukraine during electricity blackouts. Andrii Yavorskyi, a Candidate of Technical Sciences, cautions that improper use of these devices can lead to fires or complete failure. Portable power stations have become essential for many households, but they carry significant risks if handled incorrectly.
Understanding EcoFlow's Different Models and Capacities
EcoFlow offers a range of power station models with varying outputs. Smaller units like the River series can power a laptop, router, television, and lighting. More powerful versions, such as the Delta, are necessary for running boilers, refrigerators, and coffee makers. It is crucial, however, to respect the device's load capacity. For instance, a 600-watt station must not be overloaded with a 2.5-kilowatt kettle, as overloading can cause overheating and potentially lead to an emergency.
Yavorskyi also highlights the importance of battery type. Older lithium-polymer batteries are less stable than newer lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) models, which impacts overall safety. Another critical hazard is using a 'plug-to-plug' cable to connect the station directly to a home's electrical grid, a practice that can be lethal. Furthermore, users must consider temperature conditions; a unit brought in from the cold should not be turned on immediately in a warm room.
To mitigate risk, it is recommended to charge the EcoFlow unit through a voltage stabilizer, which helps protect the device from power surges. Yavorskyi also stresses that operating the station at 100% capacity for extended periods should be avoided, as this too can result in dangerous overheating.
By following these guidelines, users can safely utilize EcoFlow charging stations during power outages and avoid hazardous situations.
