Edin Terzić Takes the Helm at Athletic Bilbao
Edin Terzić is set to become the new head coach of Athletic Bilbao during the upcoming offseason. The club has secured a two-year contract with the German tactician, who will succeed Ernesto Valverde. Valverde is concluding his third stint in charge after four consecutive seasons, leaving the team currently sitting eighth in La Liga with 44 points.
Terzić's Coaching Journey
Born in Menden, Germany, Terzić has been without a club since the summer of 2024, following his second departure from Borussia Dortmund. He holds a degree in sports science from Ruhr University Bochum. His career began in 2010 as a scout for Borussia Dortmund, later serving as an assistant to Slaven Bilić at Beşiktaş and West Ham United.
In 2018, he returned to Dortmund as an assistant to Lucien Favre and took over as interim head coach in December 2020. Under his leadership, Dortmund won the DFB-Pokal and reached the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid.
For the 2025/26 season, Athletic Bilbao will compete in four tournaments, including the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España, where they have already been eliminated in the semifinals. In the Champions League group stage, the team recorded:
- two wins,
- two draws,
- four losses,
accumulating eight points. Upcoming fixtures include home matches against Valencia and Celta Vigo, as well as away games against Espanyol and Real Madrid.
This appointment marks a pivotal moment for Athletic Bilbao as they aim to improve their standing in La Liga and make a deeper impact in European competitions. Terzić brings high-level experience and a proven track record of success, which could provide the catalyst the club needs to return to elite status in the coming seasons.
As Athletic Bilbao prepares for the upcoming season under Edin Terzić, they face challenges similar to those experienced by other La Liga teams, such as Atletico Madrid's struggles with injuries to key forwards. This context highlights the competitive landscape in which Terzić must navigate to elevate the club's performance and achieve their goals.
