Wildlife Winter Feedstock Preparation
The rangers of Ukraine’s State Enterprise 'Forests of Ukraine' have already secured 60% of the necessary feed supplies to sustain wild animals through the winter. The collection process began during the summer and is expected to be completed by autumn. Alongside feedstock preparation, forest workers are busy repairing feeding stations, cleaning, and disinfecting salt licks and feeders to create safe and comfortable feeding points for wildlife.
Across 2.6 million hectares of hunting grounds, there are over 133,000 wild animals. To support them during the cold months, the following feed amounts are planned:
- 418 tons of hay,
- 368,500 bundles of feed twigs,
- approximately 2,000 tons of grains,
- over 108 tons of salt.
In certain areas, traditional feed is supplemented with juicy root vegetables and nutrient-rich silage, providing additional nourishment to the animals.
Feeding Wild Animals and Forest Recovery Initiatives
Winter feeding schedules will adapt based on weather conditions, with intensity depending on temperature and snow coverage. Additionally, 'Forests of Ukraine' is expanding its capacity for harvesting and processing forest seed materials in southern regions by installing a second state-of-the-art cone drying facility this year.
Simultaneously, in the Velyka Oleksandrivka district of Kherson region, efforts continue to rehabilitate forests damaged during last year’s military conflicts. Significant forest areas suffered destruction in autumn 2022 amid the de-occupation of the right bank. Currently, nearly one hectare of pine trees has been replanted as part of the restoration projects.
Both the preparation of animal feed and forest regeneration are critical measures to protect wildlife populations and restore Ukraine’s ecosystems. The dedication of rangers and forestry specialists is focused on promoting sustainable natural resource management and preserving the country’s biodiversity.

Forest restoration and wildlife feeding not only help conserve species diversity but also contribute to improving Ukraine’s overall environmental health.
