Crew Dragon crew leaves the ISS early due to serious illness of astronaut

Космічний корабель Crew Dragon здійснив екстрене повернення через критичний стан здоров'я одного з астронавтів.

Crew and mission Crew-11

The Crew Dragon spacecraft from SpaceX left the International Space Station early due to the serious illness of one of the crew members. The crew consists of four astronauts:

  • Zen Cardman
  • Edward Fink
  • Kimia Yui
  • Oleg Platonov

The capsule undocked from the ISS at around 22:20 GMT (01:20 Kyiv time).

Landing and medical emergency

The landing of the vessel in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California will take approximately 10.5 hours. The Crew-11 mission launched in August 2022, and the crew spent 167 days in orbit. The plan for the early return of the crew was announced on January 8. This is the first time NASA has interrupted a crew flight due to a medical emergency.

“The problem is not related to an injury sustained during the time in space.” - James Polk

This incident highlights the importance of astronaut health during long space missions and the ability to respond urgently to medical issues. As NASA and SpaceX continue to develop crewed flight programs, crew safety will remain a priority, especially as space missions become increasingly prolonged. The response to medical emergencies may impact future missions as well as the training of astronauts for potential risks in space.
