Exclusive Grand Theft Auto VI Preview Boosts Netflix Subscriptions

The release of a 26-minute exclusive preview of Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix became one of the platform’s biggest moments of 2026. According to data from Ampere Analysis, this extended gameplay showcase attracted more than 100,000 new subscribers in the United States within a single day. This surge ranked as the third-largest subscription event on Netflix this year, trailing only behind the final season of the hit series "Stranger Things" and the MMA fight between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano.

Beyond drawing in new viewers, the GTA 6 clip also re-engaged former Netflix users who hadn’t accessed the service in over 30 days. More than 5% of these inactive American users returned specifically to watch the GTA 6 trailer, marking the highest reactivation rate triggered by any Netflix film or series during this timeframe. The preview’s appeal was strengthened by its display of real gameplay footage, story-driven cutscenes, and new game features, fueling widespread excitement.

Expert Insight

“Achieving over 100,000 new subscriptions during a six-hour exclusive window highlights the powerful draw of a major gaming event. For Netflix, this approach effectively competes with YouTube for gamer attention and helps reclaim lapsed subscribers. Meanwhile, Rockstar benefits by reaching audiences far beyond the traditional fanbase of the franchise,” said Louisa Wooldridge, an analyst at Ampere Analysis.

GTA 6 is officially set to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

This milestone underscores the increasing rivalry between streaming platforms and the gaming industry. For Netflix, leveraging gaming content like this offers a promising strategy to attract and retain subscribers amid rising competition. At the same time, Rockstar gains a valuable promotional channel to broaden its reach through popular streaming services.

As anticipation builds ahead of the game’s official release, analysts predict that GTA 6 could secure 25 million pre-orders, showcasing the immense interest and potential for success in the gaming market. This surge in pre-orders may further amplify Netflix's strategy of integrating gaming content to attract subscribers.
