Expert warns of power grid collapse: how Ukraine will heat itself this winter

Експерт попереджає про можливі перебої в електропостачанні: способи обігріву України цієї зими.

Expert advises Ukrainians to prepare for autonomy due to infrastructure destruction

In conditions where Russia is intentionally destroying electrical, thermal, and gas infrastructure, Ukrainians are recommended to prepare for a harsh winter and rely on completely autonomous solutions. Energy expert Viktor Kurtev shares tips on how to survive in a crisis situation.

'All those who prepared for the black day, buying power banks and diesel generators, can be pleased. That black day has come,' the expert noted with a touch of dark humor.

The expert warns against the mass use of electric heaters, which will worsen the crisis situation at the local level. Kurtev categorically denies the use of electric heating due to the potential accident in electrical networks.

'Switching to electric heating is not an option. We will simply burn the distribution and building networks at a voltage of 0.4 kilovolts. If everyone switches to this, the system won't withstand it,' the expert warned.

Instead, it is recommended to use mobile and non-centralized heating and life support means.

Expert recommendations for readiness for crisis conditions

  • Autonomous heat: Consider purchasing heaters that do not depend on electricity or central heating, such as gas heaters or alcohol stoves.

  • Autonomous electricity: Diesel or gasoline generators, as well as charging stations and power banks, remain essential for meeting minimal electricity and communication needs.

The need to prepare for autonomy is due to the threat of destruction of energy infrastructure by Russia. It is expected that this may lead to the shutdown of heat generation and gas supply, so preparing for autonomous solutions is necessary for safety.
