Widespread Power Cuts Forecast for Summer 2024
Energy expert Oleh Popenko has warned of potential large-scale electricity blackouts during the summer of 2024. This warning comes as Ukraine's energy grid, already damaged by war, faces a dual challenge. The primary causes will be scheduled maintenance at nuclear power units, which traditionally occurs annually from May through August, combined with anticipated extreme summer heat. Popenko stated that the power generation deficit could reach 100%, leading to total blackouts.
These outages are expected primarily during peak consumption hours, particularly in the mornings and evenings. Popenko noted that during these times, for instance from 5:00 PM, deep blackouts lasting 4-5 hours are possible. July is predicted to be one of the most problematic months, as hot weather could further strain the power supply system.
Impact on the Population
The expert also expressed the view that the summer situation may not be significantly better than conditions experienced during the winter. He emphasized that in summer, people will contend with extreme heat, whereas in winter they faced the cold. Consequently, power cuts could substantially impact daily life for the population in the summer of 2024.
This scenario could have serious consequences, especially in the context of global warming where abnormally high temperatures drive increased electricity demand for cooling. The expected blackouts may affect various sectors, including business, education, and medical facilities, which will require proactive measures from the government and energy companies to mitigate the impact on critical infrastructure.
