Energy Expert Highlights Stark Disparity in Ukraine's Power Outages

Експерт з енергетики зазначає значні розбіжності в тривалості відключень електроенергії в Україні.

The State of Power Cuts in Ukraine

Energy expert Oleg Popenko has analyzed the ongoing electricity shortages in Ukraine, pointing out a severe imbalance in how blackouts are distributed between urban areas and private households. He referenced 2024 inspections by the State Energy Supervision Service, which uncovered significant operational failures within regional power distribution companies (oblenergos). These inspections are part of the government's effort to manage the grid under extreme wartime strain.

Popenko revealed a dramatic contrast: private sector consumers receive power for only about 40 minutes per day, while cities experience up to 20 hours of daily supply. For instance, in the Kyiv region, cities like Boryspil and Vyshhorod have a relatively normal electricity situation. However, in surrounding private households, residents get electricity for merely half an hour to an hour each day, and even that is subject to frequent, unscheduled interruptions.

Issues with Power Supply in Retail Chains

The expert further stressed that not all retail chains have switched to backup generators. Some shopping centers continue to operate without interruption, consuming grid power that could otherwise be directed to residential consumers, leaving a portion of the available energy unused.

This uneven distribution of electricity between different sectors of society is a major concern, and Popenko believes the situation requires urgent correction. Within the context of Ukraine's prolonged energy crisis, these issues demand systemic solutions to ensure fair access to power for all consumers, regardless of their location or type of consumption.

It is imperative that state authorities and energy companies implement measures to improve the situation and guarantee a more stable electricity supply during the current crisis.
