Guidelines for Preventing Freezing Damage in Your Home
Housing and utilities expert Oleg Popenko has issued a set of instructions for protecting your home from freezing after water has been drained from the heating system, along with advice for when the heat is restored. These guidelines were published as part of the 'Communal School' project and are available on the expert's Telegram channel.
Oleg Popenko stressed that even a small amount of residual water can lead to significant damage.
"Even 100-200 ml of water can mean ruined appliances,"the expert noted. He also highlighted the most critical moment, which occurs when the heating is turned back on. At that time, it is vital to immediately check radiators, inspect pipe risers, and examine the floor around pipes.
"If there's a drip, call the building manager right away. Don't wait, and don't assume it will dry on its own,"Popenko added.
Expert Recommendations
The expert's recommendations include several crucial steps:
- Drain all water from water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, filters, and flexible hoses.
- To protect plumbing drains, pour antifreeze, alcohol, or specialized products into toilets, sink traps, and floor drains.
- To prevent freezing, keep interior doors open and ensure windows and balcony doors are sealed tightly.
Before an extended absence, it is essential to shut off all water valves, drain water from tanks, disconnect electrical appliances, and notify the building manager or neighbors. These actions will help minimize risks and keep your home safe during cold spells.
These recommendations from Oleg Popenko are particularly relevant during winter, when the risk of water freezing in heating systems increases. Properly preparing your home for the cold can prevent serious damage and costly repairs. This advice is useful not only for owners of private houses but also for residents of apartment buildings, who may also face issues with their central heating systems. In many regions with harsh winters, such preventative measures are a standard part of home maintenance.
