Emma Andiievska, a celebrated Ukrainian writer, poet, and painter, marks her 95th birthday. Her life and work form a significant chapter in Ukrainian culture, with her creations gaining acclaim both domestically and internationally. Born on March 19, 1931, in Stalino (now Donetsk), she emigrated to the United States in 1943 with her mother after her father was executed during World War II. Following a subsequent move to Germany, where she attended a boys' gymnasium, the artist faced prolonged health struggles, yet these did not prevent her from becoming a towering figure in Ukrainian art and literature. Her career is a testament to the resilience of the Ukrainian diaspora.

An Immense Creative Output and Cultural Impact

Emma Andiievska's prolific career spans numerous poetry collections, novels, short stories, and a vast array of paintings. She is the author of 29 poetic works, alongside books of short prose and novels. In total, the artist has created over 10,000 paintings, which have been exhibited in the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Australia, Brazil, Israel, and Switzerland. Andiievska works in the styles of surrealism and hermeticism, primarily using acrylic paints and applying them to the canvas up to 25 times. She is a self-taught painter with no formal artistic education.

In literature, Emma Andiievska began her career in 1949, debuting with the poetry collection 'Poesies' in 1951. Her 2001 poetry collection 'Villas by the Sea' was nominated for Ukraine's National Taras Shevchenko Prize. Among her notable novels are:

Emma Andiievska has been a member of the National Writers' Union of Ukraine since 1994, as well as of the Ukrainian PEN Club and the Professional Association of Bavarian Artists. She divides her time between Munich and New York. Reflecting on her contribution to art and literature, the Ukrainian poet Ivan Drach noted:

'Andiievska is primarily interested in the inner world of a person, complex psychological collisions, and in revealing these she resorts to the poetics of surrealism.' Ivan Drach
