Balancing Market Debt Piles Pressure on Ukraine’s Power Industry
Accumulated debt in Ukraine’s electricity balancing market is threatening the future of the country’s energy sector. These obligations have surged to nearly 50 billion UAH, undermining financial stability and discouraging new investment. The hardest hit are balancing service providers, flexible power generators, and the transmission system operator, all of whom are struggling with non-payments.
Debt Crisis Stalls Investment in New Projects
The financial unpredictability caused by these debts makes new projects too risky. Private investors and international financial institutions are reluctant to fund the construction of gas-fired power plants or energy storage systems. Serhii Kravchuk, Director of Electricity Trading and Supply at KNESS, commented:
“No private investor or international bank will finance new gas plants or energy storage facilities if the electricity they produce can simply be absorbed by chronic debtors.” – Serhii Kravchuk
Roman Volosheniuk, Commercial Director at Elementum Energy, also warned that the debt crisis has reached a critical level. The situation is freezing new projects, which is stunting growth in Ukraine’s power sector. Immediate action is needed, as further debt accumulation could destabilize the country’s entire energy system.
Ukraine’s rising balancing market debts reflect a broader financial strain across the energy industry. Without fresh investment in new infrastructure, the crisis could deepen, threatening the nation’s energy independence. Implementing effective solutions is essential to restore stability and support the development of a more resilient energy grid, especially given global pressures and the push for sustainable energy transition.
