Analyst Warns European Energy Crisis Could Jeopardize Aid to Ukraine

Европейська енергетична криза, на думку аналітиків, може вплинути на допомогу Україні.

The European Energy Crisis

Analyst Mykhailo Shteinbok, speaking on political commentator Yuriy Romanenko's broadcast, has issued a stark warning. He stated that the unfolding global energy crisis, triggered by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, will inevitably impact Europe's capacity to support Ukraine during the ongoing war. This crisis emerges as Western nations are already grappling with inflation and economic pressures.

Shteinbok noted that discussions within the European Union about potentially resuming purchases of Russian energy resources could worsen the situation. He emphasized that if Europeans face difficulties financing their own budget deficits, their own budgets will become the priority, not aid for Ukraine.

'The crisis mechanism, which the Hormuz blockade is now accelerating, will first and foremost hit Europe. And this means it will strike at Europe's ability to provide us with aid. Because if Europeans run into the problem of financing their own budget deficit or financing Ukraine, they will finance their own budget deficit and will simply start waving goodbye to us.' — Mykhailo Shteinbok

Shteinbok also expressed deep concern regarding the consequences of Ukraine's own fiscal crisis, highlighting the state's vulnerability during wartime. He argued that relying too heavily on European assistance could lead to severe problems:

  • The danger of being left without funding due to fiscal difficulties.
  • The risk of losing economic stability in the midst of war.
'Betting on it (Europe) will lead to us ending up with our backsides bare, with a war, and by not jumping off in time, we risk collapsing, as always happens when a fiscal crisis begins in wartime. And we have a galloping fiscal crisis because we are a disabled state that lives on these oxygen cushions of Western infusion.' — Mykhailo Shteinbok

The Need for Urgent Action

Given these forecasts, it is clear the energy crisis in Europe could significantly complicate financial support for Ukraine, which is already suffering from fiscal problems due to the war. The existing risks underscore the urgent need for Ukraine to seek alternative funding sources and strengthen its own economic stability. This is crucial to reduce dependence on external aid, especially amid global economic shocks.
