Ukraine's Energy System Requires $90.6 Billion Investment; Kyiv Region Schedules Power Outages for March 6

Енергетичній системі України потрібні масштабні фінансові вливання; Київщина готується до відключень електроенергії 6 березня.

Scheduled Hourly Power Outages for Kyiv Region

Hourly power outage schedules will be implemented in the Kyiv region on March 6, 2026. This measure is necessary to limit electricity consumption due to the growing demands on Ukraine's energy sector. The country's energy infrastructure requires an estimated $90.6 billion USD for restoration and modernization over the next decade. This figure is 34% higher than previous damage assessments, highlighting the severity of the challenges facing the energy system. These outages are part of a broader, ongoing effort to manage a grid heavily damaged by conflict.

The power cuts in the Kyiv region will follow a specific timetable, dividing consumers into different groups. On March 6, from 08:00 until the end of the day, parts of Ukraine will be subject to scheduled hourly blackouts, alongside power limitation schedules for industrial consumers. The schedule for the Kyiv region is as follows:

  • Group 1.1 - no power from 08:00 to 11:00;
  • Group 1.2 - power available all day;
  • Group 2.1 - no power from 18:00 to 20:00;
  • Group 2.2 - no power from 18:00 to 20:00;
  • Group 3.1 - no power from 14:30 to 16:30;
  • Group 3.2 - no power from 11:00 to 14:30;
  • Group 4.1 - power available all day;
  • Group 4.2 - power available all day;
  • Group 5.1 - power available all day;
  • Group 5.2 - power available all day;
  • Group 6.1 - no power from 16:00 to 18:00;
  • Group 6.2 - no power from 16:30 to 18:00.

Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Valentyn Mondryivskyi, announced these measures, emphasizing the importance of supply stability.

"Amid growing challenges in the energy sector, ensuring the security of electricity supply remains a priority for the authorities,"
he stated.

The introduction of scheduled outages in the Kyiv region is a direct response to mounting pressures on the energy system. Given the enormous investment required to rebuild infrastructure, such steps may be a necessary interim measure to stabilize the power supply. Authorities are urging consumers to understand these actions, which are aimed at safeguarding the energy system's security in a context of severely constrained resources.
