A new winter worse than the last: expert on large-scale blackouts in Ukraine

Експерт оцінює наслідки зимових холодів та ризики значних відключень електроенергії в Україні.

Russia has escalated strikes on Ukraine's energy networks

Russia continues targeted strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, leading to emergency and scheduled power outages in many regions. Experts predict that this winter may be significantly more challenging for the country than the previous one.

As reported by 'Hvylya', this was stated during a broadcast on 24 Channel by Doctor of Economic Sciences, head of the analytical center Advanter Group Andriy Dlihach. According to him, Ukrainians should prepare for new large-scale blackouts and restrictions, as Russia has changed its tactics of attacks.

'Last winter we had fewer shellings and managed to stabilize the energy system. This year Russia is acting differently – the number of strikes has increased, and the targets have expanded to include not only generation facilities but also key points of the energy networks,' Dlihach noted.

He explained that risks are increasing due to low reserves of electricity inflows, especially along the banks of the Dnipro. In the event of large-scale attacks, the system could split into two parts. Moreover, Ukraine has already utilized some of its import capabilities for electricity, and local energy-independent communities still depend on trunk gas pipelines.

Preparation for a difficult winter

Despite this, the expert noted the consciousness of citizens and the state. He described the late start of the heating season as a 'smart step for savings' in conditions of lower gas reserves than last year. He also emphasized that a significant part of the business has already ensured its energy independence, and energy facilities are preparing for new attacks, including from drones.

'The winter will be cold and challenging. There are serious risks of blackouts, so both businesses and communities need to prepare in advance. There is not much time left before the cold sets in, but we can still do a lot,' Dlihach concluded.

After an increase in strikes on energy networks, the Ukrainian energy system will have to prepare for a difficult winter. Experts are urging businesses and citizens to prepare for possible blackouts and restrictions, as stable electricity supply may be at risk.
