Ursula von der Leyen's Statement on Ukraine
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the European Union cannot provide Ukraine with a specific accession date, despite the progress the country has made in implementing reforms. She praised Ukraine's remarkable speed in enacting these changes, especially given the immense challenges of wartime. The EU accession process is famously complex, requiring candidate countries to align their laws and standards with thousands of EU regulations.
Von der Leyen noted that while a clear target date is important for Ukraine, it is impossible for the EU to set a concrete timeline at this stage. She affirmed that supporting Ukraine in reaching this goal remains a priority for the European Union. The EU has identified several key areas for this support, including:
- financial assistance;
- enhancing energy resilience;
- maintaining sanctions pressure on Russia.
In Brussels, a substantial loan package and new funds for rebuilding the energy sector have been agreed upon. Furthermore, new restrictive measures against Russia are being prepared. Von der Leyen emphasized that Ukraine needs to convince many of its citizens to support the difficult reforms necessary for the country's modernization.
