EU Permanently Shuts the Door on Russian Gas Imports

ЄС остаточно відмовляється від імпорту газу з Росії.

European Union Energy Policy

The European Union has formally ruled out any return to importing Russian natural gas, embedding this direction into law. The European Commission has confirmed it will continue executing its energy strategies, including introducing new restrictions on Russian oil. This month, a ban on transporting Russian gas via pipelines under short-term contracts has taken effect.

Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, a European Commission spokesperson, stated: 'If the question is about resuming imports of Russian gas to the European Union, then no, that is not possible.'

She further emphasized that at the political level, the EU has clearly declared its intention not to revert to Russian energy sources: 'On the contrary, we are moving without regret toward their prohibition and diversification.'

Next Steps

Further energy restrictions are scheduled for January and September 2024. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for a new package of energy limitations targeting Russian oil. 'Oil will be included in this strategy, work is ongoing, and we hope to present a proposal in due time,' Itkonen added.

It is worth noting that earlier, due to the war in the Middle East and global supply disruptions, EU countries temporarily increased purchases of Russian liquefied natural gas by 25% between March and May. Data on the rise in LNG imports was provided by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. These steps are part of the broader Repower EU strategy aimed at Europe's energy independence.

The exclusion of any possibility of returning to Russian gas imports reflects the European Union's growing determination to ensure energy security and independence. The Repower EU strategy not only entails abandoning Russian energy sources but also actively diversifying energy supply sources. Given global energy challenges such as supply disruptions, this course may become key to the stability of the EU energy market in the future.

As the European Union strengthens its commitment to energy independence, the Baltic States are urging the EU to expedite the phase-out of Russian oil imports. This push aligns with the broader Repower EU strategy, highlighting the urgency of diversifying energy sources in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
