Extension of Temporary Protection for Ukrainians
The European Commission has proposed extending temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028. This proposal includes updates to the rules governing temporary protection, specifically extending the mechanism for an additional year. The final decision on these changes must be approved by the Council of the European Union.
Under the new terms, temporary protection will not be granted to newly arriving individuals who are prohibited from leaving Ukraine due to military obligations.
“The proposal envisions that temporary protection will not be given to newly arrived individuals who are not allowed to leave Ukraine due to military obligations,” said Magnus Brunner, a representative of the European Commission.This means that newly arriving men, whom Ukrainian law bars from exiting the country, will be ineligible for temporary protection status in EU nations.
