EU Aims to Approve 20th Sanctions Package Against Russia on February 24

ЄС планує ухвалити новий пакет санкцій проти Росії 24 лютого.

EU's 20th Sanctions Package Against Russia

The European Union is working towards approving its 20th package of sanctions against Russia on February 24. This development follows a meeting of the EU Council on Foreign Affairs in Brussels, where discussions are ongoing. However, a unanimous position among all EU member states has not yet been reached, highlighting the complex negotiations involved in such measures.

Proposed New Restrictions

The package currently under discussion includes several key proposals:

  • A complete ban on maritime services;
  • An expansion of sanctions within the energy sector;
  • New restrictions targeting mineral fertilizers.

Brussels must still finalize and agree on the definitive list of restrictions to implement the planned actions.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas stated: 'Regarding the 20th sanctions package, we aim to have it ready by February 24.'

She added: 'I cannot say we have an agreement now, otherwise we would have announced that we have an agreement. But we had many discussions today, and we continue to work on it.'

These planned sanctions represent a significant step in the EU's ongoing response to Russia's military actions in Ukraine. The effectiveness of these measures depends heavily on the bloc's ability to present a united front, making the final alignment of all member states a critical diplomatic challenge. The duration of the talks and potential disagreements between nations could impact the potency of the new restrictions in countering Russian policy.
