Security situation in the European Union in 2026

The European Union will find itself in a worse security situation in 2026 than in 2025, caused by its dependence on the United States of America and insufficient support for Ukraine. In the years 2026-2027, the EU will not be able to agree on the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine's defense. This issue becomes even more relevant against the backdrop of political changes in the USA, where Donald Trump remains president, which may affect international relations.

Expert analysis and risks for Europe

Experts note that 2025 may become the moment when the West ceases to exist as a united political force. Europe's dependence on the USA undermines its autonomy and ability to act in critical situations. As analyst Francis Dearnley states:

“Europe has left its fate and the fate of Ukraine tied to the goodwill of an ally who may prove unreliable.”

This indicates the risks associated with political unpredictability in the USA, which can negatively impact Europe's security.

Despite the urgency of the issue, the EU has not used frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine's defense, which also indicates a lack of coordination among member states. The absence of a joint strategy and financial support may lead to a worsening security situation in the region. Thus, the situation in 2026 will be significantly more complicated than in the previous year, threatening not only the stability of the EU but also the security of Ukraine.

This analysis underscores the importance of collective security in the face of global challenges, particularly for the European Union, which is trying to find a balance between external and internal threats. Given the possible political changes in the USA and their impact on international support, the EU urgently needs to develop strategies to reduce dependence on external allies and strengthen its internal security policy to effectively respond to the challenges faced by the region.
