EU Agrees on New Air Travel Rules: Compensation Up to €600 and Stronger Passenger Protections

Нові правила авіаперевезень в ЄС: компенсація до 600 євро та покращений захист прав пасажирів.

Updated Aviation Regulations Across the European Union

European Union lawmakers have reached a political deal on revised air travel rules, maintaining the existing compensation framework for flight delays while introducing fresh safeguards for passengers. Under the new regulations, travelers will be entitled to financial compensation if their flight is delayed by more than three hours. Payouts will range from €250 to €600, depending on the distance of the journey. This compensation system has been in place across the EU since 2004.

New Requirements and Passenger Rights

Airlines will now be required to display the full ticket price upfront, including fees for carry-on luggage. Small personal items such as backpacks and handbags will remain free of charge by default. Children under 14 must be seated next to their parents or guardians at no extra cost, and passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility have gained the right to sit beside their companions.

Additionally, if a person with a disability misses a flight because the airport failed to provide timely assistance to the boarding gate, they may claim compensation, support, and an alternative route. The EU has also prohibited airlines from forcing passengers to download mobile apps to obtain a boarding pass. Travelers can now choose between digital or paper boarding documents without any extra fees or restrictions.

A key innovation is that carriers must offer more extensive assistance—such as meals, hotels, and alternative tickets—when a passenger misses a connecting flight due to a delay on the first leg. Furthermore, plans are underway to eliminate additional charges for correcting minor spelling errors in names on tickets, a frequent source of disputes between passengers and low-cost carriers.

Though a political agreement has been reached, it still requires final approval and formal enactment into EU law. The proposed changes could significantly impact the travel experience, enhancing passengers' rights to comfort and fairness during air journeys.

Once implemented, these new regulations have the potential not only to improve service quality but also to strengthen trust in airlines and the overall perception of air travel in Europe.

As the EU implements these new air travel regulations, it's important for travelers to understand how these changes affect their rights and compensation options. For instance, recent discussions have also led to a compromise on compensation for flight delays and cancellations, which offers further insights into the evolving landscape of passenger protections.
