Restoring Water Supply and Sanitation in Ukraine
The European Union is backing a major initiative to repair Ukraine's critical water and sewage systems, which have suffered extensive damage. An expert working group has selected 41 projects to participate in the 'Ukraine Water Recovery' program. The European Investment Bank will provide €100 million in loans for project implementation, while the European Commission will contribute a €25 million grant for co-financing.
Project Status and Details
Among the chosen projects:
- 30 projects, with a high degree of readiness, are valued at a total of €70.7 million;
- 11 projects, with a lower degree of readiness, are estimated at €25.8 million.
Additionally, a reserve list of 13 projects, with a total value of €58.4 million, has been created. This investment is a key part of broader international efforts to rebuild Ukraine's public infrastructure. Kostiantyn Kovalchuk noted that
"the first competitive selection became an important source of analytics on the real state of the sector."This underscores the active efforts to improve Ukraine's water supply infrastructure.
This program is a vital component in restoring Ukraine's critical infrastructure, which has been impacted by conflict and inadequate maintenance. The investments from the European Investment Bank and the European Commission highlight international support for improving the viability of water supply in the region, which can positively impact the population's quality of life and contribute to the country's sustainable development.
In addition to the EU's substantial investment in water infrastructure, Ukraine is also set to benefit from a significant recovery fund aimed at various sectors. This comprehensive support reflects a broader commitment to revitalizing the nation's economy and public services.
