The EU will abandon Russian gas by 2027: how and when it will happen

Європейський Союз планує повністю відмовитися від російського газу до 2027 року: ключові етапи та терміни переходу.

Plan to abandon Russian gas imports

The ambassadors of the European Union countries have agreed on a plan to abandon imports of Russian gas by the autumn of 2027. This step involves a gradual cessation of purchases of Russian liquefied natural gas by the end of 2026, and pipeline gas supplies will conclude by the end of September 2027. This decision marks an important milestone in reducing the EU's dependence on Russian energy resources.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the share of Russian gas in EU imports has significantly decreased — from 45% in 2022 to 12% in October 2023. This reflects Europe's efforts toward energy independence and reducing risks associated with energy blackmail. The official approval of the ban is expected to take place at the level of the ministers of EU countries and the European Parliament.

'This decision will put an end to Moscow's energy blackmail and deprive it of revenues that fuel the war.' Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas

Geopolitical changes in Europe

This plan to abandon Russian gas not only contributes to reducing the EU's energy dependence but also reflects broader geopolitical changes in Europe that have occurred as a result of Russian aggression. The reduction of imports of Russian energy resources aims not only at economic but also political goals, promoting stability in the region and decreasing Moscow's opportunities for energy pressure on EU countries.

This decision may also stimulate the development of alternative energy sources and new energy technologies in Europe.
