Brussels Demands Hungary Immediately Lift Its Ban on Ukrainian Agricultural Exports

Європейський Союз закликає Угорщину скасувати заборону на експорт українських агропродовольчих товарів.

EU Pressures Member States Over Restrictions on Ukrainian Goods

The European Union is calling on Hungary and other member nations to remove unilateral restrictions imposed on Ukrainian agricultural products. European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier described these measures as unjustified and urged their repeal. He stressed that the updated free trade agreement already includes necessary safeguard mechanisms designed to ensure fair competition for all market participants.

These restrictions, introduced by Hungary and several other EU countries, threaten to fragment the bloc's single market. The recent update to the EU-Ukraine Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area includes a special protective clause that activates automatically if additional imports from Ukraine cause serious economic difficulties for the EU or individual member states.

Diplomatic Talks and Next Steps

Regnier declined to specify potential legal or financial penalties, noting that Brussels is focusing on dialogue and outreach. Last week, Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced a ban on importing a significant portion of agricultural goods from Ukraine. As a result, talks between the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Hungary are scheduled for the last week of May, aiming to arrange a future meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Peter Magyar.

"We call on the relevant member states to lift their unilateral measures, and we continue to engage with them to achieve this outcome," Regnier stated.

He further emphasized that "given the robustness and protection clearly provided by the updated Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area agreement, we do not consider these steps necessary." The conclusion of these negotiations could mark a key step in resolving the current dispute over restrictions on Ukrainian products.

This situation highlights tensions among EU member states and underscores the importance of preserving the single market, which is vital for the region's economic stability. Lifting the restrictions could improve trade relations between Ukraine and EU countries while strengthening support for Ukraine's economic reforms and integration into European structures.

As tensions rise over agricultural trade, it's important to note Hungary's recent decision to halt imports of Ukrainian agricultural products, a move that has drawn significant attention. This ban, along with Hungary's shifting stance on international cooperation, highlights the broader implications for regional trade dynamics.
