New EU Sanctions Announced
The European Council has imposed new sanctions on two organizations involved in disseminating Russian propaganda. The decision, enacted on Tuesday, targets the media platform Euromore and the Foundation for the Support and Protection of the Rights of Compatriots Living Abroad. According to the EU, Euromore is part of Russia's information infrastructure, while the Foundation is financed by Moscow. This move is part of the bloc's ongoing effort to counter disinformation campaigns originating from Russia.
Accountability for Destabilizing Actions
These additions bring the total number of sanctioned entities to 69 individuals and 19 organizations. The European Council stated that
“the designated organizations are responsible for supporting actions and policies of the Russian government which undermine democracy, the rule of law, stability, and security in the European Union and Ukraine.”
In a related development, Europol, in cooperation with Dutch partners, has conducted an operation aimed at locating Ukrainian children who were forcibly displaced or deported to temporarily occupied territories, Russia, and Belarus. These actions underscore the EU's broader efforts to address the human rights consequences of the war.
The latest sanctions are viewed as a component of a larger strategy to counter Russian influence in the region, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. By targeting the media platform and the foundation, the EU demonstrates its readiness to combat disinformation and defend democratic institutions. The Europol operation further highlights the intensification of international efforts to resolve humanitarian crises, specifically the protection of children's rights affected by the conflict.
