Ashley Cole Appointed as Manager

Italian Serie B club Cesena has appointed former England and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole as its new head coach. He replaces Michele Mignani, who had been in charge since 2024. Cole's contract runs until the end of the season and includes an option for an extension. This marks Cole's first senior managerial position, a significant step for a player with a decorated career. At the time of his appointment, Cesena sits eighth in the Serie B table and is on a seven-match winless streak. Their last victory came in early February with a 2:0 home win against Pescara.

Ashley Cole's Career

Born in a London suburb, Ashley Cole is a product of Arsenal's academy, making his first-team debut in the 1999/2000 season, which also included a loan spell at Crystal Palace. He remained with Arsenal until the summer of 2006 before transferring to Chelsea, where he spent eight successful seasons. He later played for Roma, LA Galaxy, and Derby County. Throughout his playing career, Cole amassed an impressive collection of honors:

  • Three Premier League titles
  • Seven FA Cups
  • Three FA Community Shields
  • One League Cup
  • The UEFA Champions League
  • The UEFA Europa League

Cole began his coaching journey in 2019, working with academy players at Chelsea. He has since gained experience as an assistant coach with the England U-21 national team, Everton, Chelsea's first team, Birmingham City, and the senior England national team.

Founded in 1940, Cesena was refounded in 2018 following financial difficulties. The club first reached Italy's top flight, Serie A, in 1973 and achieved its highest finish of sixth in the 1975/76 season, qualifying for the UEFA Cup, where they were eliminated in the first round by Magdeburg. Over the years, Cesena has been home to notable players like Sebastiano Rossi, Dario Hübner, and Vincenzo Iaquinta, and has been managed by renowned figures including Marcello Lippi, Marco Tardelli, and Giuseppe Iachini. The club last competed in Serie A during the 2011/12 campaign.

The appointment of Ashley Cole as head coach represents a crucial move for Cesena as they seek to reverse their recent poor form. The club possesses the potential to improve its standing in Serie B, and Cole's extensive experience as both a player and a coach could prove instrumental in guiding them toward success.
