Estonia is experiencing an increase in illegal border crossings and has intensified the rotation of border guards along its border with Belarus. Interior Minister Igor Taro revealed that over 40 individuals suspected of unauthorized entry were detained within a week. The government remains committed to managing the situation by extending the ESTPOL mission aimed at migration control.
The rotation of border personnel will continue until colder weather arrives, as migration pressure typically eases due to harsher conditions. Taro explained,
"Our goal is to maintain coverage until the onset of freezing temperatures. Historical patterns show that once the cold sets in, it becomes difficult for unauthorized migrants to hide in Belarusian forests, making them less active and easier to monitor."
He also highlighted recent observations from a visit to Latvia, stating,
"Although there was a lull for some time, the situation remains challenging based on what I saw firsthand."
Illegal migrants tend to enter Estonia in waves, often organized by groups operating from forest camps in Belarus. To enhance border security, Estonia has sought assistance from Finland. Finnish border officials have expanded their role by:
- Operating within airports;
- Conducting patrols in ports;
- Participating in joint border patrols;
- Inspecting roadways, transportation hubs, and scheduled bus services.
According to Minister Taro, "Finnish officers have also been active in western and southern regions, joining joint patrols, checking various road routes and transport nodes, and even inspecting regular bus lines, which has proven highly effective."
All migrants apprehended in Estonia who are suspected of entering via Latvia are returned to Latvian authorities. The Minister noted that these individuals most likely gather in forest encampments within Belarus before being transported in groups. This pattern points to orchestrated efforts by another state, underscoring the complexity of illegal migration challenges in the region.
