Estonian court to consider restrictions on churches supporting Russia's aggression

Судові органи Естонії розглянуть можливість обмеження діяльності релігійних установ, які підтримують агресію Росії.

President's petition hearing

The Estonian court will consider President Alar Karis's petition to recognize amendments to the Church and Parish Act that restrict the activities of churches supporting Russia's aggression. The hearing on this matter will take place on February 3, 2026, at 10:15 in Tartu.

Invited to participate in the proceedings are:

  • members of parliament
  • government representatives
  • chancellor of justice
  • minister of justice and digital technologies
  • representatives of religious organizations

In April, the Estonian parliament already approved a new law prohibiting religious organizations from maintaining ties with foreign states that threaten national security.

Impact on religious organizations

Additionally, it should be noted that in 2024, at the second session of the Estonian Orthodox Church, a new version of the statute was adopted, emphasizing the church's administrative independence. It is worth mentioning that Estonia has not renewed the residence permit of Metropolitan Evgeny, as he poses a security threat.

This process reflects the growing concern of the Estonian government regarding the influence of foreign states on national security, especially in the context of Russia's aggression. The court's decision could have significant consequences for religious organizations in Estonia, which may be forced to reconsider their international relations. Discussions around this issue are expected to resonate widely both in society and among the country's religious circles.
