European Aquatics Postpones the Return of Russian and Belarusian Athletes Under Their National Flag

Європейські водні види спорту відклали відновлення участі спортсменів з Росії та Білорусі під їхніми національними прапорами.

Setback for Russian and Belarusian Athletes' Return to Competition

European Aquatics has decided to delay the reinstatement of Russian and Belarusian athletes competing under their own national symbols and anthem. This move follows the organization's request to World Aquatics, the international governing body for aquatic sports, to postpone a previously approved decision. In April 2026, World Aquatics officially lifted sanctions against Russia and Belarus, clearing the way for athletes from those countries to compete under their national flags in disciplines such as swimming, diving, artistic swimming, high diving, and water polo.

However, in late April, European Aquatics appealed for a delay, citing the current situation in Europe. In response, World Aquatics permitted Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete only as neutral individuals. A European Aquatics representative stated,

“I received a very good letter from the president and executive director of World Aquatics. They clearly understand the situation in Europe, which is why they allowed us to postpone the implementation of this measure.”

European Championships and Contrasting Approaches by Other Bodies

The European Aquatics Championships are scheduled from July 31 to August 16 in Paris, where Russian and Belarusian athletes will only be allowed to compete in a neutral capacity. In February 2026, European Aquatics had permitted junior-level athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under their national symbols, but full sanctions imposed on senior teams following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine remain in effect.

Meanwhile, the United World Wrestling (UWW) has fully reinstated Russia and Belarus, allowing their athletes unrestricted participation in international competitions across all age groups. Russian wrestlers were banned from events from March 2022 until April 2023, after which they began competing as neutrals. In September 2024, UWW relaxed its eligibility criteria for Russian and Belarusian athletes, and in January 2026, following a recommendation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the organization approved the participation of all wrestlers from Russia and Belarus in the U23 age category under their national flags.

European Aquatics' decision highlights the ongoing tensions in sports, where political and social factors heavily influence athletes' ability to compete internationally. While some organizations like UWW are restoring full rights for Russian and Belarusian athletes, others, such as European Aquatics, are taking a more cautious stance given the current climate in Europe. This reflects the broader debate over sanctions and neutrality in sports, especially in the wake of military conflicts that strain international relations. The next moves by global sports federations will be closely watched in this evolving context.

As European Aquatics navigates the complex landscape of international sports governance, the situation echoes the recent decision by World Athletics to maintain sanctions against Belarus despite recommendations from the IOC. This contrast in approaches highlights the ongoing tensions within the sporting community regarding the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus.
