Planned Visit by European Lawmakers to Russia
A Luxembourgish politician, Fernand Kartheiser, is organizing a trip for members of the European Parliament to Russia on June 3, where they would meet with officials from the Russian State Duma during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The event is expected to feature Vladimir Putin, adding weight to the proposed meeting. Kartheiser has offered to assist with accommodation arrangements and provide personal invitations to the forum.
This initiative has drawn sharp criticism, as it conflicts with an official EU ban on such engagement. The European Parliament suspended all dialogue with Russian legislative bodies back in 2014. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian and Belarusian officials were also barred from entering European Parliament buildings.

Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius condemned the plan, calling it
“an open attempt to recruit European lawmakers to work for Russia as informants and agents of influence,”adding that
“such efforts aim to weaken the West under the guise of political diplomacy.”
Kartheiser, for his part, insists the trip is funded through private sources. He has refused to disclose the names of any MEPs who have expressed interest in participating. Notably, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas avoid direct contact with Russian officials—a stance that underscores the sensitivity of the situation. The European Parliament has stated that any MEPs engaging with Russian diplomatic or state bodies do so entirely in their personal capacity.
