Winter as a Weapon: European Commission's Stance
The European Commission has accused Russia of using winter as a weapon by targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure. During a European Parliament debate, Commissioner for Enlargement, Márta Kos, stated that Russia's actions could be compared to genocide. She called for new sanctions and an increase in the supply of air defense systems to support Ukraine against these winter assaults. This strategy aims to break the Ukrainian people's resilience by striking at their ability to stay warm and powered during the coldest months.
Aid for Ukraine and Calls for New Sanctions
Since the start of Russia's aggression in February 2022, the European Union has provided Ukraine with 1.3 billion euros in humanitarian aid. Separately, the Netherlands plans to allocate 35 million euros for the purchase of solar panels for Ukrainian hospitals through the 'Ray of Hope' initiative.
In her address, Márta Kos noted that Russia is deliberately attacking Ukrainian power plants and other critical infrastructure during the coldest part of winter to break the nation's spirit. She emphasized the urgent need for more air defense systems and missiles to protect Ukraine's energy network.
