European Commission Investigates Platform X
The European Commission has initiated a formal investigation into the social media platform X concerning its AI chatbot, Grok. The probe focuses on the tool's ability to generate realistic, sexualized images of real individuals, including children, without their consent. This investigation highlights the growing regulatory scrutiny of AI-generated content and its potential for harm. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), which acts as the EU's lead privacy regulator for many major tech firms, launched the inquiry following numerous reports about the creation of malicious deepfakes. The DPC will examine whether X is complying with its obligations under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The European Commission's investigation is also being conducted under the EU's Digital Services Act. Graham Doyle, Deputy Commissioner of the DPC, stated that the regulator has been engaging with X since the initial reports emerged several weeks ago. In response to the controversy, xAI, the company that developed Grok, has already implemented technical restrictions on the chatbot. Grok can no longer edit photographs of people to add swimwear or underwear. Furthermore, the creation of images and the ability to edit them via a Grok account are now features restricted to paying subscribers.
Measures Taken by xAI
Representatives from xAI confirmed they have taken steps to prevent the editing of images of real people into revealing clothing.
"We have implemented technical measures to prevent the editing of images of real people into revealing clothing, such as bikinis, within the Grok account. This restriction applies to all users, including paying subscribers,"the company noted. The DPC and European Commission investigation aims to ensure the protection of human rights and privacy in the face of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence technologies.
This situation underscores increasing global concerns regarding the ethics and safety of AI, particularly in the context of protecting personal data and children's rights. The restrictions imposed on the Grok chatbot could set a precedent for other companies operating in this sphere, as it is crucial to ensure responsible technology use to prevent abuse.
The investigation may also contribute to the formation of new regulatory requirements in the field, allowing for better control of the risks associated with deepfakes and other forms of image manipulation.
