EU Endorses Ukraine’s Request for Patriot Interceptor Missiles
The European Commission has authorized Ukraine's purchase of Patriot interceptor missiles valued at €3.2 billion, funded through the EU’s €90 billion credit facility. This decision plays a crucial role in preparing Ukraine’s air defense system for the challenging autumn and winter months. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense emphasized that these Patriot missiles are essential for protecting civilians and critical infrastructure from Russian missile attacks, including ballistic threats.
Backing from the EU and the United Kingdom
The European Union expects to finalize the release of these funds by the end of the week. Previously, the EU has disbursed €8.4 billion to Ukraine, with a portion allocated to enhancing air defense capabilities. Recently, the UK’s Prime Minister and Defense Secretary visited Kyiv to discuss additional support needs with the Ukrainian President.
In addition, the UK is providing a new air defense aid package worth £100 million (approximately €116 million). This package will include:
- air defense interceptors
- large-caliber artillery shells
- drones
- Patriot missile system rockets
The delivery of this equipment is planned for the winter season and will be coordinated through the PURL mechanism, which enables allied acquisition of US-made weaponry for Ukraine.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, commented: "Together with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, I welcome member states’ agreement to grant Ukraine a crucial exemption allowing the procurement of essential components for the Patriot air defense systems."
She further highlighted that this fresh €3.2 billion funding will significantly boost Ukraine’s capacity to defend its airspace against Russian missile strikes.
Amid rising threats from Russian forces, Ukraine’s collaboration with international defense partners continues intensively. Meanwhile, Estonia’s Defense Minister Pevkur recently resigned following a controversy over a €70 million ammunition procurement for Ukraine, underscoring the sensitive and vital nature of international military assistance in the current conflict.
