Creation of the Drone Alliance
The European Commission, together with Ukraine, has announced the formation of the Drone Alliance, aimed at strengthening defense capabilities and protecting the airspace of the European Union. The project, named EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance, will unite manufacturers of systems, innovators, startups, and users from EU countries, the European Economic Area, and Ukraine. The key objective of the alliance is to enhance the potential of unmanned and anti-drone systems based on experiences gained during combat operations in Ukraine.
The first competition to select founding members of the alliance, who will form the initial Board, has already been announced. Legal entities with proven experience in the defense drone ecosystem of the EU or Ukraine are invited to participate. Defining drones and counter-drone means as priority areas aligns with the Defense Readiness Roadmap, highlighting the seriousness of this initiative. The creation of the alliance is part of a broader European Defense Initiative against drones.
Drone Coalition and New Projects
In addition to the new initiative, a Drone Coalition already operates in Europe, uniting over 20 partner countries. This coalition finances the supply of drones for the Defense Forces of Ukraine, coordinated by the United Kingdom and Latvia. The launch of the Drone Coalition took place in February 2024 as part of the Ramstein format. The following countries are included in its composition:
- Lithuania
- Poland
- Germany
- France
- Canada
Moreover, Ukraine and Norway announced the start of the first joint production of mid-strike drones in Norway for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This project emphasizes the significance of international cooperation in the defense sector and technologies of unmanned aerial vehicles.
The formation of the Drone Alliance is an important step in enhancing the defense capabilities of Ukraine and the European Union, especially in light of contemporary threats. This initiative also reflects the growing role of drones in military operations and the need to adapt defense strategies to new technologies. International cooperation realized through the Alliance and the Drone Coalition can significantly enhance security in the region and long-term stability in Europe. For the Russian reader, it is important to understand: these steps directly affect the balance of power in the conflict zone and accelerate the implementation of advanced defense solutions.
An important aspect of international cooperation in unmanned technology is the joint production of drones between Norway and Ukraine. This project not only strengthens Ukraine's defense capabilities but also highlights the relevance of cooperation in high technologies. Details about the new agreements can be found in our article on joint production of UAVs, which will become an important step in the development of the defense industry.
