European Defense Industry Program
The European Commission has approved a €1.5 billion work program under the European Defense Industry Program (EDIP). This initiative is designed to modernize the EU's defense sector, deepen cooperation with Ukraine, and fund specific priorities. These priorities include ammunition production, joint investments, and collaborative procurement efforts. This funding boost comes as Europe seeks to bolster its industrial capacity and support partners facing security threats.
Specifically, over €700 million will be allocated to ramp up production of critical defense components, such as:
- Counter-drone systems
- Missiles
- Ammunition
A further €260 million, via the Ukraine Support Instrument (USI), is earmarked for joint investment projects. These projects aim to expand manufacturing capacity both within Ukraine and across EU member states.
An additional €325 million is designated for European Defense Projects of Common Interest (EDPCI), which Ukraine and Norway are eligible to join. Furthermore, €240 million is reserved for joint procurement of defense equipment by EU member states and Norway. Defense startups and small-to-medium enterprises will receive €100 million in support through the Fund for Accelerating the supply chain Transformation (FAST).
Initiatives and Calls for Proposals
Under the BraveTech EU initiative, €35.3 million will be directed toward advancing defense innovation. The first calls for proposals under the EDIP framework will open on March 31, 2026, on the EU Funding and Tenders Portal.
A European Commission press release states that 'EDIP will address urgent defense and security challenges in Europe by increasing industrial production capacity, enhancing cooperation with Ukraine, strengthening joint European procurement, and developing European defense projects of common interest.'
