The European Commission has formally requested that Ukraine submit a schedule for repairing the damaged Druzhba oil pipeline, a critical conduit for Russian oil into Europe. The pipeline was damaged in a Russian attack on its Ukrainian section earlier this year, halting oil deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia since January 27. This incident highlights the persistent vulnerabilities in Europe's energy infrastructure amid the ongoing war.
Hungary and Slovakia subsequently sought assistance from Croatia to secure alternative supplies of Russian oil, but Croatian Economy Minister Ante Sušnjar stated this would not happen.
Officials from Slovakia and Hungary have accused Ukraine of delaying the repairs for political reasons. However, the European Commission has assessed that there are no immediate short-term risks to oil supply security for these two nations.
"A barrel of oil bought from Russia might seem cheaper for some countries, but it helps finance the war and attacks on the Ukrainian people" - Ante Sušnjar.
European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen noted that both member states maintain 90-day strategic oil reserves, which should prevent any immediate supply disruptions.
