European Commission Inspection Mission for Ukraine
The European Commission has formally offered to deploy an inspection mission to assess the condition of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline in Ukraine. This proposal follows several weeks of intensive discussions between Brussels and Kyiv. European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen confirmed that the Commission is in contact with Ukraine and with EU member states that have expressed specific concerns on the matter.
Anna-Kaisa Itkonen: 'We have been engaged in intensive discussions and contacts with Ukraine on this issue for several weeks, as well as with the most concerned member states. I can inform you that we have proposed a pipeline inspection mission in Ukraine and are awaiting a reply.'
Hungary's Expert Group
Concurrently, Hungary has sent a group of experts to Ukraine, though this delegation does not hold official status. The team, led by State Secretary for Energy Gabor Czepek, includes an oil industry specialist, a senior official with international relations experience, and an energy market analyst. Prior to the Ukraine visit, the Hungarian delegation held talks in Bratislava with representatives of the Slovak energy market and government.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhy stated that the Hungarian specialists lack official delegation status and have no formal meetings scheduled, indicating the informal nature of their visit. It has also been revealed that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban briefed the delegation before its departure. Meanwhile, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen added, 'We are still in contact with the Ukrainians, with our member states, but I don't have any details at this stage.'
The proposed inspection of the 'Druzhba' pipeline is significant due to the route's critical role in regional energy security, as it transports Russian oil into Europe. The Druzhba pipeline is a major artery for European energy supplies, and its operational status is a matter of strategic importance. Discussions surrounding its condition reflect broader political and economic dynamics between Ukraine, the EU, and neighboring states.
