EU-Russia Diplomatic Line Established

European Council President António Costa has instructed his team to set up a direct diplomatic link with Russia. This move is purely technical in nature and does not involve substantive discussions or negotiations. The goal is to ensure readiness for a time when conditions may allow for engagement with the Russian Federation, while safeguarding the European Union’s interests.

Costa personally informed EU leaders of his decision during a meeting. Contacts are described as strictly technical.

“These are brief interactions without any exchange of views on substance or negotiations—just diplomats doing their job,” sources reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy supports a more active European role in diplomatic efforts, underscoring the importance of this process.

Peace Settlement Strategy

European nations, together with Ukrainian authorities, are developing a strategy to bring Russia into peace negotiations. EU leaders have noted that the European Council President is the natural representative of EU interests in these matters. It was previously revealed that Costa’s closest adviser has had several contacts with a Russian official close to President Vladimir Putin.

Establishing this diplomatic channel could mark the first step toward restoring communication between the European Union and Russia, potentially influencing the regional situation significantly.

This initiative may signal Europe’s desire to find ways to ease tensions and revive constructive dialogue. It also sends a strong message to the international community that the EU remains open to engagement, even under challenging circumstances. Crucially, the move highlights the need for close coordination with Ukraine, which continues to be a key player in the region, as its security and sovereignty remain central to the international political agenda.

As diplomatic efforts evolve, it's worth noting that Brussels has also initiated discreet channels with the Kremlin. This development underscores the complex nature of European diplomacy, highlighting the delicate balance between engagement and caution in navigating relations with Russia amidst ongoing tensions.
