The European Commission has proposed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, setting a new target in the EU Climate Law. European Commissioner for Climate Wopke Hoekstra noted that this is an important step towards enhancing the EU's competitiveness and protecting countries from extreme weather conditions and global warming.
Hoekstra emphasized that protecting citizens and economies from climate change is a priority. After the proposal is published, it will be discussed in the European Parliament and the EU Council with the aim of being adopted in the legislative process. This is a step towards achieving the goal of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, which was accepted by the European Union and its member states.
